Introduction

Electrical Engineer in the Engineering Department (EN), Electrical Engineering Group (EL), Electrical Network Project Section (ENP). 

 

You will join:

 

  • The Department that provides engineering competencies, infrastructure systems, and technical coordination for the world's largest particle accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.

  • The Group that is responsible for CERN's electrical transmission and distribution network from 400 kV to 400/230 V. Its main missions are to operate, maintain, extend and renovate the electrical network, make projections for CERN's electrical energy consumption and manage relations with the energy suppliers. The group is also in charge of making modifications and extensions to the network when required by new projects, with project studies, equipment procurement, installation, supervision and commissioning.

  • The Section that is responsible for the management of the projects related to the consolidation and upgrade of the electrical network within the group and coordinates the associated design, procurement, installation, commissioning and handover activities with support from other sections of the group as required. The section also manages the equipment-related activities for the HTB equipment, diesel generators, HTB and HTA cables accessories.

 

Functions

As Electrical Engineer in the Electrical Network Project (ENP) section, you will actively take part in the extension, consolidation and the renovation of the electrical distribution network at CERN. You will be one of the project engineers taking care of the CERN's electrical distribution network for the future.

 

You will:

 

  • Manage projects for the consolidation and extension of the existing electrical network involving multidisciplinary activities such as civil engineering, cooling and ventilation, IT systems.

  • Discuss the requirements with the stakeholders.

  • Draw up technical specifications and manage industrial supply contracts.

  • Carry out preliminary studies to assess the feasibility of projects, defining the preliminary budget, planning and seeking the management approval.

  • Coordinate the study phase of the project as well as the detailed design, collaborating with resources within CERN or with external companies.

  • Coordinate the execution and finalize phases of the project, from onsite installation to commissioning and subsequent handover to the operation and maintenance teams.

  • Manage scope, planning, budget, risks, opportunities and report to the management on a regular basis.

  • Contribute to the preparation of the medium and long-term development studies of CERN's electrical distribution network.

 

Qualification required

Master's degree in the field of Electrical engineering, or equivalent.

 

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

 

  • A demonstrated experience in the design, construction and commissioning of electrical substation projects and industrial electrical installations, both high and low voltage.

  • A demonstrated strong theoretical and practical knowledge of high voltage and low voltage equipment is absolutely essential.

 

The technical competencies required for this post are:

 

  • Project management.
  • Design, construction and commissioning of high and low voltage substations and industrial electrical installations.

 

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

 

  • Managing self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
  • Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.

The language competencies required are:

 

  • Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts would be an advantage. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and project reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.

Note on Employment Conditions

We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry. 

Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

  • Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence is required.
  • Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
