We are seeking an exceptionally experienced applied physicist or electrical engineer, with in-depth knowledge of superconducting materials and magnets, proven leadership, skills in the organization of large international projects, and a worldwide academic recognition. You will participate in leading the development and characterization of the superconductors, superconducting cables, superconducting magnets and associated technology that will forge the future of superconducting accelerator magnets for the LHC, and beyond. Applied physicist in the Technology Department (TE), Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (TE-MSC) Group.
The post is opened in the Technology Department (TE) that is responsible for the technologies specific to existing particle accelerators, facilities and future projects. More specifically you will integrate a leading position in the Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (TE-MSC) Group which is responsible for:
- Design, construction and measurements of superconducting and normal conducting magnets for the CERN accelerator complex.
- Integration in the CERN accelerator complex, magnet cryostats and magnet quality control.
- Support to operation of the accelerators for magnets, magnet performance, devices (current leads).
- Development of associated technologies, namely superconductors, insulation and polymers, superconducting electrical devices and magnetic measurements for present and future accelerators.
As an applied physicist or academic electrical engineer, you will participate in leading the team of scientists and technicians in the CERN TE-MSC Group, and work on the development, characterization and prototyping of superconductors, superconducting magnets and associated electrical devices for the High-Luminosity Upgrade of the LHC, as well as future projects. You will:
- Take responsibility for the definition of specific high field superconductors and magnet R&D programs, their implementation, including material and personnel budget, the follow-up and evaluation of the results.
- Participate in the definition of the medium and long-term strategy for accelerator magnet R&D, defining directions, finding opportunities, creating partnerships and following-up collaborations.
- Assist the line management in the administrative tasks associated with the normal operation, project activities and development of the TE-MSC group.
The activity requires frequent communication and reporting to line and project management, interaction with different teams and services at CERN, as well as external laboratories and industry worldwide.
PhD in the field of applied physics or electrical engineering, on a topic of applied superconductivity relevant to the design, engineering and construction of high field superconducting accelerator magnets, or equivalent.
The experience required for this post is:
- Long-standing and proven experience in applied superconductivity, LTS and HTS materials and their applications, and specifically in relation to accelerator magnet technology.
- Long-standing and proven experience in the field of test and measurements of superconducting magnets in cryogenic conditions.
- Extensive leadership experience in an international environment, with a record of proven technical and managerial achievements in the scope of large size magnet projects, and the ability to lead large teams.
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Knowledge of superconducting materials and High Temperature Superconductivity: expert knowledge in superconducting cables, superconducting magnets and related physics.
- Knowledge, manufacturing, follow-up and QA of production of SC strands and SC cables (direct experience required).
- Applied electromagnetics and application to magnet design and optimization.

The language competencies required are:
- Spoken and written English and French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts.
- Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
