Laser Physicist for Particle Beam Production

Laser physicist for particle beam production in the Engineering department (EN), Sources, Targets and Interactions group (STI), Lasers and Photocathodes section (LP).
You will join:
The Engineering department which provides engineering competencies, infrastructure systems, and technical coordination for the world's largest particle accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.
The Sources, Targets and Interactions group which has the mandate to study the interactions of beams with matter, aiming to apply its know-how to particle generation (ISOLDE ion sources and targets, fixed targets for experimental areas, AWAKE plasma and electron sources, CLIC photoinjectors), and to particle interception (collimators, absorbers and dumps). The skills involved and available in the group include nuclear physics and engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, control systems and electronic design, photonics and laser spectroscopy.
The Lasers and Photocathodes section which is in charge of laser-based particle sources, in particular the RILIS (Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source) of the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam laboratory and contributes to the construction and operation of the laser installations and photoinjector used at the AWAKE experiment at SPS. The section is also responsible for photocathodes and laser installation of the photoinjector of the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) and contributes to the photoinjector studies within the CLIC project.
As a laser physicist in the LP Section, you will apply your skills in photonics and optics for production of charged particle beams using laser methods. Having a solid knowledge in simulation, design and operation of laser-based systems, you will:
Contribute to the support and development of nanosecond high average power dye and solid-state lasers used for production of radioactive ion beams with RILIS for the ISOLDE experiments. Assure operation of laser systems with high efficiency and high reliability.
Construct and maintain the laser beam lines for plasma and electron sources, operate the terawatts-level 100 fs CPA laser system of the AWAKE experiment.
Participate in the R&D activities related to optimizing ion beam production methods based on laser/matter interactions.
Ensure the development of the picosecond laser and optical system for the photo-injector of the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) and maintain the required level of performance and stable operation.
Explore the feasibility of the photo-injector method for the drive beam injector of the CLIC accelerator project.
Ensure implementation of laser safety measures; define and follow work procedures in accordance with laser and general safety standards.
Specify and purchase optical and laser equipment.
Supervise students, associates and fellows for R&D studies and support to operation.
Maintain awareness of, and adapt to, the rapid evolution of optical and laser technology
Provide expert assistance to laser users at CERN.
Master's degree in the field of laser physics, quantum electronics, optics, or equivalent.
The experience required for this post is:
Proven experience in design, construction and operation of high power pulsed lasers.
Demonstrated experience in simulation and realization of frequency multiplication by non-linear optical techniques.
Knowledge and experience in design of optical systems for laser beam transport and control.
Experience in one or more of the following fields would be an added advantage: photoemission processes, ionization techniques, laser spectroscopy, signal acquisition systems, use of computer design tools.
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Simulation and design of laser-based systems.
- Simulation and design of imaging, illumination or laser optics: application of laser beam imaging and diagnostic devices.
- Use of optical spectroscopy based techniques: for atoms and plasma.
- Organisation, planning and control.

- Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and public holidays.
- Work during nights, Sundays and public holidays.
- Work in radiation areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving licence.
- Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
