LHC Engineer-in-Charge (EIC) in the Beams Department (BE), Operations Group (OP), Large Hadron Collider Section.
The BE Operations Group (OP) is responsible for the operation of all CERN accelerators. These facilities run 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for 9-11 months per year. As an Engineer-in-Charge (EIC) you will take responsibility in the CERN Control Centre for the effective and safe operation of the Large Hadron Collider during commissioning, regular operation and machine development.
The Operations Group is responsible for the operation of the entire CERN accelerator complex, which currently consists of four Linacs, seven synchrotrons and seven experimental areas. In addition to producing the colliding beam in the LHC, the complex also supplies protons and heavy ions to varied proton, antiproton and heavy ion experimental programs. The Group is also responsible for the operation of CERN's technical infrastructure.
You will join:
The Beams department (BE), responsible for the beam production, beam and accelerator physics, beam diagnostics, radiofrequency acceleration and controls system for the entire CERN accelerator complex including the LHC;
The Operations Group (OP), responsible for the operation of all accelerators at CERN, their associated Experimental Areas and the overall technical infrastructure. Further details on the Operations Group can be found at: https://be-dep-op.web.cern.ch
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Section, a dynamic, 14-strong team that runs the LHC.
This position offers you the opportunity to join a multinational team with a range of skills and expertise. You have the chance to broaden your knowledge into new areas of technical specialty and receive specific training and support for professional development.
As LHC Engineer-in-Charge in the BE-OP-LHC Section, you will:
- Be part of the 24-7 shift team that runs CERN's accelerator complex.
- On a shift rotation, take responsibility in the CERN Control Centre for the effective and safe operation of the LHC during commissioning, regular operation and machine development.
- Take initiative in the optimisation of the LHC performance.
- Acquire a thorough knowledge of the various accelerator hardware systems and associated controls software, as well as the underlying accelerator physics of LHC operation.
- Outside of shift work, work in collaboration with the Beams Department, Beam Instrumentation (BE-BI) Group to develop beam measurement and diagnostic systems for the LHC and other CERN accelerators.
- You will also be required to contribute to the Hardware Commissioning and Powering Test programs which precede periods of beam commissioning and subsequent operation with beam.
Master's degree in the field of physics or engineering, or equivalent. A PhD would be an asset.
The experience required for this post is:
- The main requirement for this post is experience in commissioning or operation of accelerators, accelerator systems or detectors.
The following would be an advantage:
- Demonstrated experience of accelerator physics.
- Experience with control systems and data analysis techniques.
- Experience with design and construction of components for accelerators.
- Software engineering in a modern development language environment (JAVA, C++, Python etc.).
- Detector design, construction, testing and operation.
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Knowledge of accelerator physics theory.
- Accelerator operation.
- Accelerator performance analysis & optimization.
- Application of beam measurement devices.
The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

The language competencies required are:
- Spoken and written English: Ability to draw-up technical specifications documentation and/or scientific reports.
- Basic knowledge of French or a willingness to acquire it rapidly.
