Meet Chiara, a Communication and Fundraising Officer at the CERN & Society Foundation

Tell us a little about yourself and what brought you to CERN?

Ciao, I am Chiara, a Communication and Fundraising Officer at the CERN & Society Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CERN. With a Bachelor’s in international relations and diplomatic affairs and a Master's in fundraising, both earned at the University of Bologna, I embarked on my CERN journey in 2021 as my first work experience.

Meet Anton, a Data Science PhD student at CERN!

Tell us a little about yourself and what brought you to CERN?

Heyo! I am Anton, I am 27 years old, and I am currently a doctoral student at CERN in my first year, affiliated with the Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien) in Austria. I am, however, by nationality Swedish, and graduated last year (2022) from a diploma programme in Engineering Physics and a M.Sc. in Machine Learning, from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

CERN & the European Commission – promoting conditions for researchers

As part of our collaboration with the European Commission, CERN subscribes to the principles of the European Commission’s European Charter of Researchers and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. These principles are best practice guidelines, designed to promote equal rights and obligations for individual researchers throughout Europe by specifying the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of researchers, as well as those of funders and/or employers of researchers. They promote attractive research careers and boost employment and working conditions for European researchers.

CERN was granted the HR Excellence in Research Award of the European Commission in the framework of the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HR4SR) following the success of its application in December 2018. CERN is now listed among the HRS4R acknowledged institutions.

CERN strives to keep its webpages and online application experience dynamic and enjoyable for its visitors and candidates and carries out regular benchmarking studies for continuous improvement.

In the Potentialpark Study Europe 2022, of the 105 companies surveyed CERN ranked #15 overall, #22 in the category Career Website, #10 in the category Social Media, #58 in the category Applying Online, and #47 in the category Mobile. View the 2022 ranking of the most talent friendly employers in Europe.

Since 2002, Potentialpark’s market research has brought the voice of the candidates to both employers and universities.

CERN also features in the Universum 2022 top 10 ranking: by engineering students (ranked 6th) and natural science and IT students (ranked 5th) of the best companies to work for in Switzerland.

Last but not least, in 2021 CERN is among the finalists in the Linkedin Talent Awards 2021, Switzerland Best Talent Acquisition Team!

The

BENEFITS

of working at

CERN

Work-Life Balance

People at CERN benefit from 6 weeks' paid holiday as well as 2 weeks' Christmas Shutdown. The reference working week is 40 hours and the working day is 8 hours. Employees are entitled to annual leave of 2.5 working days per month of service. Other special leave includes maternity, paternity and adoption leave, as well as Home Leave for some Staff Members. There is also the possibility to purchase additional leave to allow for some flexibility in working hours.

Diversity and Inclusion

We are proud to announce the Enlarged Directorate’s strong endorsement of CERN’s first ever targets-based strategy to boost the nationality and gender diversity over the next five years! CERN's Diversity Policy is anchored in "appreciating differences, fostering equality and promoting collaboration", through a work environment based on mutual respect and exchange.

A town within a town

On-site, CERN has a bank, kindergarten, post-office, travel agency and library, not to mention access to three restaurants and free parking every day.

From music to sports to photography the list goes on and on. You can't help but find something that floats your boat (maybe the yachting club?). Find here the full list of CERN clubs.

Pension Fund

The purpose of the Fund is to insure its members and beneficiaries as well as the members of their families against the economic consequences of disability, old age and death. As an international organisation, CERN has created its own social security system, including a pension scheme, the CERN Pension Fund. The Fund, which is a defined-benefit scheme, is an integral part of CERN.

Health Insurance

As an intergovernmental organization, CERN has its own health insurance: the CERN Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS). The main purpose of the CHIS is to safeguard its Members against the financial consequences of illness, accidents and maternity by providing reimbursement of expenses arising from medical treatment.

CERN also has other optional insurances and benefits that can be found here.

Relocation Support

An international indemnity is aimed at compensating the expenditure associated with the integration of the staff members and their family in the Geneva area. This financial benefit is paid every six months to staff members whose home station is situated outside a circle with a 100 km radius, or a 150 km radius in Switzerland and France, with its centre at CERN, and who were not living in this circle during the past five years. The installation indemnity is paid to staff members who reside over 70 km from CERN at the time of their Selection Board and who establish their new place of residence within a radius of 50 km from CERN within two years of taking up their appointment. The amount will vary depending on the family situation on the start date of the contract.

Environment

CERN is fully committed to environmental protection and transparent reporting. It is also committed to developing technologies that could help society to improve the health of the planet, and to be a role model for environmentally responsible research. CERN has made a commitment to communicate on its environmental footprint every two years in order to ensure transparency and demonstrate its leadership in environmental management for research organisations. Family Benefits

CERN's site has creche facilities that can be used by all personnel. Furthermore, CERN provides support for paying school fees as well as financial allowances for family, child and infant support.

Remuneration

CERN's salary conditions can be found here.

We like building things and breaking things. We like talking about the universe and particles, but we also like a bunch of other things.

From mechanics, data science, software engineering, international relations, firefighting to our plans for a weekend in the mountains and lakes.

We like people like us, and we love people that are not like us.

Experienced or not, let’s meet and make CERN a place like nowhere else on Earth.
